Style Your Ceremony: 5 Beautiful Ideas

Planned to Perfection – a monthly column by Bijou Wedding Venues.

Expert Wedding Advice from Bijou Wedding Venues: Setting the scene for your elegant wedding ceremony.

We often find ourselves shedding the odd tear at the gorgeous ceremonies we see at our collection of exclusive use wedding venues. The excitement of a page boy getting their own starring moment, the nerves of a beautiful bride, or the raw emotion of a groom seeing his bride for the first time, never gets old. Take a look at our styling ideas to see how you could add an extra-special something to your wedding day look.

The Aisle

Everyone deserves to walk down the aisle in style and depending on your style as a couple, you might go for a glam red (or white) carpet or a more minimalist row of candle-lit hurricane lanterns. Our best advice for your aisle if to think about this when you book you’re booking your wedding venue. Some venues, such as our or our outdoor ceremony space at Notley Abbey in Buckinghamshire, see an aisle appear through a natural arched hedge. Choosing a beautiful venue for the outset can save you a lot of decorating effort in the long run.

Top Tip: Remember to factor in the width of your dress and whoever is walking you down the aisle in to your plans – some wedding dresses can be surprisingly wide, so you won’t want it catching on any décor!

The Seats

These are often forgotten about in the flurry of design ideas online, but the seats for your guests will likely take up more room than anything in your ceremony space. Again, choosing a venue that has stylish chairs as standard will save you a lot of money on chair covers to hide anything unsightly. Consider enhancing your venue’s chairs with fuss-free posies affixed to the end of each aisle, or some elegant ruffled sashes in a colour to match your overall scheme.

The Backdrop

Not just the backdrop to saying your vows, but the backdrop to countless wedding photos that you will look back on for many years: make sure your ceremony backdrop is timeless and won’t be a look you’ll regret years down the line. Keep it simple with strings of glistening fairy lights perhaps (particularly stunning for a dusk ceremony late in the year), or go all out with a striking flower wall (as long as it doesn’t upstage your dress!). We love unique ideas such as oversized floral arrangements standing tall on plinths, or a perfectly timed sunset ceremony outdoors.

Top Tip: Always check with your venue what you can and can’t decorate, just in case there are any restrictions, particularly in listed buildings – old houses, for example, don’t like hammers and nails!

The Registrar’s Table

Not just the backdrop to saying your vows, but the backdrop to countless wedding photos that you will look back on for many years: make sure your ceremony backdrop is timeless and won’t be a look you’ll regret years down the line. Keep it simple with strings of glistening fairy lights perhaps (particularly stunning for a dusk ceremony late in the year), or go all out with a striking flower wall (as long as it doesn’t upstage your dress!). We love unique ideas such as oversized floral arrangements standing tall on plinths, or a perfectly timed sunset ceremony outdoors.

Wedding Stationery

Well thought out wedding stationery can add an extra layer of style to your wedding ceremony. Not only do reserved seat signs look pretty on the front few rows, but they are also particularly important if you have a set seating plan. If you do want people to sit wherever they like, don’t forget to tell them. Hire, or make your own large “pick a seat sign,” to impress as soon as your guests enter your ceremony. Creating Order of Service cards to scatter amongst your ceremony seating is also a simple way to add more of your own personal style; we love bespoke seals and personalised logos.
